Professional Development

What types of activities can be used to fulfill Act 48 requirements?

To meet Act 48 requirements, professional educators must complete collegiate courses, continuing professional education courses (offered by intermediate units), or noncredit continuing education activities that are relevant to the educator’s certification area or professional responsibilities, as stated in 24 PS 12-1205.2(c). The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) interprets this to include:

  • Courses or noncredit activities directly related to the educator's certification content area
  • Courses or noncredit activities focused on instructional methods, pedagogy, classroom strategies/tools, management, assessment, or evaluation
  • Courses or noncredit activities in language skills such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening
  • Courses or noncredit activities in mathematics, reasoning, and the sciences
  • Courses or noncredit activities that support inclusive and equitable classroom environments
  • Courses or noncredit activities involving educational technology
  • Courses or noncredit activities focused on student wellness, interpersonal skills, school climate, and resilience

How can I check how many Act 48 hours I need?

Please note that it is the responsibility of the employee to monitor and maintain their Act 48 compliance, as it is a requirement to keep your certification active.

To request Act 48 hours for self-selected activities such as courses or webinars, please complete the [ACT 48 Request Form]. Make sure to include the necessary documentation, such as proof of completion and reflection, as outlined in the form.
